Chapter 11 - The Missing Box

Daniel said there was one final box.

A box containing the original corporate records.

Richard had searched for it for years.

Julian had searched too.

His wife stared at Daniel.

“Where is it?”

“I don't know.”

Julian immediately looked at him.

“Then why bring it up?”

“Because your father-in-law told me who would find it.”

Leo looked up.

“Who?”

Daniel smiled sadly.

“You.”

Leo looked confused.

His mother stepped closer.

“Me?”

Daniel nodded.

“He believed you'd eventually stop trusting Julian.”

She looked at her son.

Then at the phone.

“Why didn't you tell me earlier?”

“Because I didn't know who was watching.”

Julian suddenly turned.

“Watching?”

Daniel nodded.

“Richard has people everywhere.”

The ballroom guests began murmuring.

Julian looked around nervously.

His wife noticed.

“You're afraid.”

Julian looked at her.

“For the first time tonight, yes.”

Daniel reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a photograph of an old storage facility.

On the back was an address.

Her wife recognized it.

“My father's old warehouse.”

Daniel nodded.

“He kept business records there.”

Julian stepped forward.

“It's empty.”

Daniel looked at him.

“You checked?”

Julian stopped.

Daniel smiled.

“Exactly.”

Leo looked at his mother.

“Mom, should we go?”

She shook her head.

“Not tonight.”

Daniel nodded.

“Good.”

Julian looked relieved.

Then Daniel said:

“Because Richard knows about this gala.”

Everyone turned.

A board member asked:

“How?”

Daniel looked at Julian.

“Because Julian told him.”

Julian's face went pale.

“I didn't.”

Daniel pulled out his phone.

“I have the call.”

He played the recording.

Julian's voice was unmistakable.

“Make sure the warehouse stays empty.”

His wife looked at him.

Julian whispered:

“I was trying to protect you.”

She answered:

“No.”

She looked at Leo.

“You were trying to protect yourself.”
