Chapter 17 - A Different Father

A year passed.

Julian followed every condition of his sentence.

He worked.

He attended counseling.

He paid restitution.

He never contacted his wife unless necessary.

But he never missed a visit with Leo.

At first, Leo barely spoke.

Then slowly, things changed.

They played chess.

They went to baseball games.

They ate pancakes on Sunday mornings.

Julian never bought expensive gifts.

He learned that Leo didn't need them.

One afternoon, Leo asked:

“Dad?”

Julian looked up.

“Yes?”

“Do you miss the old life?”

Julian thought about it.

“The money?”

“No.”

“The company?”

“No.”

“The house?”

Julian smiled sadly.

“Sometimes.”

Leo nodded.

“What do you miss?”

Julian looked at him.

“Who I thought I was.”

Leo frowned.

Julian continued.

“I thought being successful meant nobody could tell me no.”

Leo considered that.

“Mom tells you no all the time.”

Julian laughed.

“Yes.”

“Does that bother you?”

“It used to.”

“And now?”

“Now I think she's usually right.”

Leo smiled.

It was the first time they had laughed together in months.

Later that day, Julian gave Leo a small box.

Inside was his old watch.

The expensive one he had worn at the gala.

Leo looked at it.

“You don't want it?”

“I want you to have something that reminds you.”

“Of what?”

“That time isn't something you can buy back.”

Leo looked at his father.

“I'll keep it.”

Julian nodded.

They sat quietly.

The relationship was not repaired.

Not completely.

But it was real.

And for the first time, Julian understood that rebuilding something honestly took much longer than destroying it.
