Chapter 7 - THE OLD FIRE

Evelyn finally confessed part of the truth.
Twenty years earlier, Matteo’s father had been murdered during a warehouse fire.
Officially, the fire was ruled an accident.
But Sophia had been there that night.
She had seen someone leaving through the rear entrance.
She had never known the man’s identity.
Yet she remembered one thing.
A distinctive gold ring.
Matteo immediately thought of his family.
His uncle Vincent wore one.
Evelyn admitted Vincent had paid her to keep Sophia silent.
“But why poison her now?”
“Because she started remembering.”
Matteo stared at her.
“She remembered the ring?”
“No.”
Evelyn looked terrified.
“She remembered the face.”
Before Matteo could ask more, the lights suddenly went out.
A crash came from the hallway.
Then a scream.
May you like
Emma.
Matteo ran.
