Chapter 16 - THE RECORDING
The recording was twenty years old.
Static filled the speakers before Vincent's younger voice emerged.
“Your brother can't be allowed to talk.”
Richard's voice answered.
“What about the woman?”
“She'll be dealt with.”
Sophia covered her mouth.
Matteo closed his eyes.
The confirmation hurt more than he expected.
His father's death had not been an accident.
The poisoning had not been an isolated crime.
Vincent had been eliminating witnesses for decades.
Then another voice appeared.
A woman's voice.
Matteo suddenly opened his eyes.
He recognized it.
His mother.
“What did she know?”
Sophia began trembling.
Matteo stopped the recording.
For one terrible moment, he wondered whether everything he believed about his parents had been a lie.
Then Sophia touched his arm.
“Don't destroy yourself trying to understand people who destroyed themselves.”
Her words settled over him.
Matteo looked at her.
She had lost years because of his family.
Yet she still sounded compassionate.
He realized then that revenge would not heal them.
