Chapter 4 - THE HIDDEN KITCHEN
Matteo ordered the entire staff into the dining hall.
Nobody was allowed to leave.
Evelyn stood at the far end, perfectly calm.
Matteo placed the medicine bottle on the table.
“Who handled this?”
No one answered.
“Again.”
A young kitchen assistant raised her hand.
“Mrs. Marchetti kept it in the locked cabinet.”
Evelyn glared at her.
The girl immediately lowered her eyes.
Matteo looked toward the cabinet.
“Open it.”
“It’s private household property,” Evelyn replied.
Matteo’s gaze became ice-cold.
“Open it.”
The cabinet was unlocked.
Inside were cleaning chemicals, medicines, vitamins, and several small bottles with handwritten labels.
Dr. Hayes examined them.
Then he found a second container hidden behind a stack of towels.
The label had been scratched away.
Matteo opened it.
A bitter chemical odor rose into the air.
Daniel immediately stepped back.
“This needs laboratory testing.”
Matteo closed it.
Then he looked at Evelyn.

She was no longer calm.
For the first time, her hands were shaking.
