Chapter 20 - THE PROMISE
Months later, Matteo stood in the garden watching Emma chase butterflies.
Sophia joined him.
“She changed you.”
Matteo smiled.
“She saved me too.”
Sophia looked surprised.
“From what?”
He watched Emma laugh.
“From becoming someone who only knew how to protect people with money and fear.”
Sophia was silent.
Matteo continued.
“After my father died, I believed strength meant never showing weakness.”
“And now?”
“Now I think strength means making sure the people beside you don't have to be afraid.”
Sophia smiled.
Emma came running toward them, holding a yellow flower.
“For you, Mama.”
Then she handed another to Matteo.
“And you.”
He accepted it solemnly.
“Thank you.”
Emma looked between them.
“We're a family now?”
Sophia froze.
Matteo looked at her.
Then at the little girl.
“Yes,” he said.
“We are.”
The estate that had once hidden poison, betrayal, and twenty years of secrets finally became something else.
A safe place.
