Chapter 24 - THE OLD HOUSE

Matteo decided to renovate the unused east wing.

It had remained closed since his father's death.

Sophia worried that opening it would bring back painful memories.

Matteo agreed.

But when Emma asked to see it, he changed his mind.

They entered together.

Dust covered the furniture.

The curtains had faded.

Yet sunlight streamed through the tall windows.

Emma found an old wooden chest.

Inside were photographs, letters, and children's books Matteo had owned decades earlier.

“You were little too?”

“Yes.”

“Were you scared?”

Matteo thought about it.

“Yes.”

Emma looked surprised.

“You?”

“Even me.”

She smiled.

“Then you know.”

Those words stayed with him.

Later, Matteo decided to transform the entire wing into a library and family room.

His father's office became a reading space.

The old bedroom became Emma's art room.

Nothing was erased.

The painful history remained.

But it was surrounded by new life.

That was how healing worked, Matteo learned.

You didn't have to destroy the past.
