Matteo summoned the family's former attorney, Richard Cole.
Richard arrived carrying an expensive leather briefcase and a practiced smile.
“You know, Matteo, these old accusations can destroy reputations.”
Matteo placed the letter on the desk.
Richard stopped smiling.
“You recognize it.”
“No.”
“Your face says otherwise.”
Richard slowly sat down.
Sophia entered behind Matteo.
The moment Richard saw her, his expression changed.
“You survived.”
Sophia stared at him.
“You remember me.”
Richard looked away.
Matteo's voice sharpened.
“What happened the night my father died?”
Richard remained silent.
Then he whispered, “Vincent wanted the records destroyed.”
“And you helped him.”
“I was afraid.”
“So was Sophia.”
Richard looked toward her.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Finally, he admitted everything.
He had forged documents, altered financial records, and helped Vincent stage the warehouse fire.
But he insisted he never knew Vincent planned to kill anyone.
Matteo didn't believe him.
Yet Richard had something else.
