Chapter 13 - A NEW HOME

Sophia tried to return to work three days later.
Matteo found her carrying a basket of folded towels.
“No.”
She stopped.
“I can work.”
“You nearly died.”
“I still have bills.”
Matteo took the basket from her.
“You won't worry about bills.”
Sophia immediately shook her head.
“I don't want charity.”
“It isn't charity.”
He placed the basket on a table.
“I'm offering you a position with better pay, medical coverage, and normal working hours.”
Sophia stared at him.
“Doing what?”
“Household supervisor.”
She laughed softly.
“You trust me after everything?”
Matteo looked directly at her.
“I trust the woman who kept this estate running while everyone else took her for granted.”
Sophia's eyes filled.
From the doorway, Emma shouted, “Mama gets promotion!”
For the first time in weeks, Sophia laughed.
Matteo smiled too.
It felt strangely unfamiliar.
Yet good.
