Chapter 26 - THE WEDDING INVITATION
A year after the poisoning, Sophia received an invitation.
Her cousin was getting married.
Emma insisted Matteo attend.
“You're family.”
Matteo pretended to be offended.
“I wasn't invited.”
Emma crossed her arms.
“Then I'll invite you.”
Sophia laughed.
“You heard her.”
So Matteo went.
At the wedding, Emma danced until her shoes slipped off.
Sophia watched her daughter with tears in her eyes.
Matteo stood beside her.
“She has changed.”
“She finally feels safe.”
Across the reception hall, Emma grabbed Matteo's hand.
“Dance!”
“I don't dance.”
“You do now.”
She pulled him onto the floor.
People laughed.
Matteo awkwardly followed her steps.
Sophia joined them.
For years, Matteo had avoided celebrations.
They made him remember the family he had lost.
But that night, he understood something.
A new family didn't erase an old one.
