Chapter 2 - THE BOTTLE

Evelyn stared at Matteo as though he had suddenly become a stranger.

“I brought vitamins,” she said.

Matteo held out his hand.

“Give them to me.”

She hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

He took the bottle himself, examined the label, then slipped it into his pocket.

“Sophia, when did you start feeling sick?”

“Shortly after Evelyn began giving me these.”

Evelyn stepped forward. “She has been under enormous stress.”

Matteo turned sharply.

“Then why did you never call a doctor?”

“I intended to.”

“After three weeks?”

Evelyn’s expression hardened.

“I manage this house, Mr. Romano. I don’t answer to every accusation.”

“You do when someone almost dies under my roof.”

Emma suddenly whispered, “Mama spit one out yesterday.”

Everyone froze.

Matteo crouched beside her.

“Why?”

“She said it tasted funny.”

Evelyn’s face lost its color.

Matteo noticed.

Then he smiled coldly.

“Interesting.”

That evening, the estate stopped feeling like a home.

It became a crime scene.

And Matteo intended to search every corner.
