Chapter 25 - THE APOLOGY
Matteo's mother came to visit Emma.
She brought flowers and an old jewelry box.
“I owe you both an apology,” she told Sophia.
Sophia listened quietly.
“You protected my son,” she continued. “But I allowed fear to silence me.”
Sophia shook her head.
“You were afraid too.”
“That doesn't erase what happened.”
“No.”
The two women sat together in silence.
Then Sophia smiled.
“What matters is what you do now.”
Matteo watched from across the room.
He had expected bitterness.
Instead, he witnessed something stronger.
Forgiveness with boundaries.
His mother opened the jewelry box.
Inside was a delicate necklace.
“It belonged to my grandmother,” she said.
She gave it to Emma.
The little girl stared at it.
“It’s beautiful.”
“It should belong to someone who will build a better future.”
Matteo's mother looked toward Sophia.
“Perhaps she already is.”
Sophia smiled.
The room felt lighter.
