Chapter 47 - The Final Horizon

The dawn broke over Lake Michigan with a brilliant, blinding flash of amber and white, painting the clouds in magnificent shades of gold and pale blue. Down on Michigan Avenue, the traffic hummed in endless, orderly waves, police cruisers patrolling clean streets, freight trucks moving seamlessly between terminals, and the ancient machinery of the city turning with clockwork precision under their management.

In the penthouse overlooking the lake, the lights of the city slowly faded against the morning sun. Serena stood on the glass balcony in her simple silk robe, holding a cup of tea as the cool morning breeze caught her hair.

Behind her, the sliding glass door clicked open, and Dante stepped out, wrapping his heavy wool coat around her shoulders before pulling her back against his chest. His arms were strong, steady, and unbreakable—the anchor she had never known she needed, and the weapon she had forged for herself.

"Where to next, Mrs. Vance?" he asked quietly, his voice a low rumble against the morning air.

Serena smiled, looking out toward the endless, glittering horizon where the lake met the infinite sky.

“Nowhere,” she whispered, resting her hands over his heart as the steady, familiar beat answered every thought in her mind. “We’re right where we’re supposed to be.”
