Chapter 38 - The Midnight Horizon

The evening brought a profound, crystalline silence over the estate as they returned to their private residence north of the city limits. Vale House stood proudly against the dark backdrop of the lake, its historic stone walls illuminated by soft exterior architectural lighting, its fires burning steady and warm in every hearth.
Inside the master study, Serena sat curled up in a deep leather armchair by the roaring fireplace, a glass of vintage red wine resting on the side table while she reviewed the final blueprints for a new children's hospital wing funded entirely by their foundation.
The heavy oak door swung open silently, and Dante walked in, having discarded his suit jacket and loosened his silk tie. He crossed the room, pulling up a smaller armchair to sit directly opposite her, resting his elbows on his knees as he watched her face dance in the amber firelight.
"You're still working," Dante noted, though there was no heat in his voice—only a deep, abiding affection.
"I'm not working, I'm finalizing," Serena replied without looking up from the blueprints. "The groundbreaking ceremony is in three days. I want to make sure the endowment fund is locked down in perpetuity so that no future municipal administration can ever misallocate those resources."
"You protect this city better than the federal government ever could," Dante chuckled, leaning forward and reaching across the gap to take her wine glass away, replacing it with his own hand. "Stop looking at blueprints, Serena. Look at me."
Serena finally lifted her gaze, her dark eyes locking onto his piercing stare. The formidable corporate executive vanished, leaving only the woman who had trusted her soul to the most dangerous man in the Midwest—and won.
She set the papers aside, stood up from her chair, and walked over to his side, straddling his lap and wrapping her arms around his neck. Dante's hands immediately found her waist, anchoring her against him with fierce, possessive strength.

"You know," Serena whispered against his lips, "for a ruthless syndicate boss, you've turned out to be a terrible distraction."
"The best distraction you'll ever find, Mrs. Vance," Dante murmured before pulling her into a deep, consuming kiss that made the rest of the world instantly disappear.
