Chapter 21 - The Waterfront Gala

The annual Chicago Waterfront Preservation Gala was the premier social event of the summer season, bringing together the city's elite, municipal leaders, international diplomats, and captains of industry under a sprawling white marquee pitched along Navy Pier. The night air was warm and smelled faintly of lake water and roasted garlic, while a string quartet played classical arrangements beneath suspended fairy lights.
Standing on the raised outdoor terrace overlooking the dark, rolling expanse of Lake Michigan, Serena wore a backless gown of midnight-blue chiffon that caught the moonlight with every subtle movement. Her hair was swept up in an intricate braid, anchored by a single diamond hairpin that Dante had given her on their anniversary.
Beside her, Dante stood in a crisp tuxedo, holding a flute of sparkling mineral water as he surveyed the glittering crowd mingling below. The transition of the Moretti syndicate into a legitimate philanthropic and infrastructure powerhouse was now an accepted, celebrated fact among the city’s upper crust. No one whispered behind their hands anymore; instead, mayors and chief executive officers lined up simply to secure five minutes of Serena's time.
"Mayor Vance is heading this way," Dante warned quietly, nodding toward the glass double doors leading from the ballroom. "He wants to pitch the new high-speed rail link connecting O'Hare directly to the downtown financial district. And he wants the Moretti Foundation to underwrite thirty percent of the capital."
Serena didn't even turn her head; she simply took a calm sip of her champagne, her eyes fixed on the distant lights of cargo ships cruising toward the harbor. "Tell him thirty-five percent," she replied smoothly, her voice laced with sharp, tactical confidence. "On the condition that the construction contracts are funneled exclusively through the vocational training academies we established on the West Side. Our graduates get the jobs; the city gets the rail link. Everyone wins."
Dante’s lips curved into an appreciative, dangerous smile. "You are a ruthless negotiator, Madame Chairperson. The politicians never stand a chance."

"They are dealing with an administrator who used to feed them while they plotted in our dining room," Serena retorted dryly, finally turning to meet his gaze. "They are remarkably easy to manage once you realize they value their public approval ratings far more than their integrity."
As Mayor Vance approached them with an eager, obsequious smile plastered across his face, Dante stepped slightly closer to Serena, his hand resting securely and possessively on the small of her back. The gesture was subtle, but it sent an unmistakable message to every powerful man in the room: she was the brains of the empire, but he was the wall that protected her. And together, they were completely untouchable.
