Chapter 43 - The Sanctuary of Memory

As evening descended, the estate transformed into a warm, inviting haven. The fires in every hearth burned steady and bright, casting long, elegant shadows across the marble floors of the grand hallway.
Serena retreated to the private library on the second floor, a room lined with rare books, historical archives, and comfortable leather armchairs. She poured two fingers of aged bourbon into a heavy crystal glass, swirling the amber liquid thoughtfully as she stood before the crackling fireplace.
The door clicked open, and Dante walked in, having discarded his suit jacket and rolled up his sleeves. He crossed the room silently, taking the glass from her hand, taking a slow sip, and then setting it aside before pulling her into his arms.
"You're quiet tonight," Dante murmured, his voice a low vibration against her chest as he rested his chin on the top of her head.
"I was just thinking about how fragile it all could have been," Serena confessed, her voice dropping to a near-whisper. "If you hadn't walked into that kitchen six years ago... if I had made one wrong calculation during the audit... we would have ended up like the rest of them. Bodies in an alleyway, forgotten by morning."

"You didn't make a wrong calculation," Dante corrected fiercely, his grip tightening around her. "You calculated every variable, outsmarted every boss, and forged a weapon out of your own survival. You weren't a victim of the underworld, Serena. You were its executioner."
Serena looked up, meeting his dark, unwavering gaze. The tension of the memory dissolved, replaced by the profound, absolute certainty that they had won the war against their own history.
