Chapter 20 - The Echoes of Valentina

The private archives of the Moretti estate were kept behind a heavy, climate-controlled vault door that only opened for Serena and Dante. Unlike the high-tech security grids of the downtown tower, this room was a sanctuary of memory—lined with leather-bound ledgers, framed black-and-white photographs of Old Chicago, and rows of mahogany cabinets containing the personal journals of Valentina Moretti.

Serena stood alone in the dim, amber-lit aisle, her fingers tracing the embossed gold lettering on the spine of a journal dated 1984. The pages smelled of aged paper, dried lavender, and ink. It was here, amidst the silent ghosts of the family's brutal history, that Serena had first learned the true nature of the empire she now helped govern.

A soft click echoed down the stone aisle as Dante stepped into the vault, his footsteps muffled by the thick Persian runner. He walked up behind her, looking over her shoulder at the open ledger on the slanted reading desk.

"You spend more time down here than I do," Dante noted quietly, his hand resting gently on the small of her back.

"I'm looking for her voice," Serena admitted, turning a page to reveal Valentina’s sharp, elegant handwriting detailing the delicate balance between fear and survival in a city run by wolves. "She understood something that Donato and the old guard never grasped. She knew that power isn't about how many people you can terrify into submission. It's about what you leave behind when your name is no longer enough to keep the peace."

Dante leaned down, resting his forehead against her temple. "Valentina recognized you the moment she watched you cook that first meal in the main kitchen. She told me before she died that the syndicate would either die with her generation or evolve through yours. She was right."

Serena turned around in his arms, looking up into his piercing blue eyes. "Do you ever wonder what she would say if she could see us now? Not hiding in the shadows, not laundering money or running extortion rackets, but funding hospitals, building schools, and walking through this city with our heads held high."

"She would probably tell us we took entirely too long to figure it out," Dante chuckled softly, a warm, affectionate smile lighting up his hardened features. "And then she would demand a cup of your coffee—and actually tell you the truth about whether it had too much sugar."

May you like

Serena laughed, the sound echoing lightly off the stone walls of the vault. She reached up, framing his face with her hands, her thumbs brushing against his cheekbones. "Well, my recipe has improved significantly over the last six months. Even you admitted it."

"Even I admitted it," Dante agreed softly, pulling her into a slow, deliberate kiss that sealed the past away forever. The ghosts of the estate could rest in peace; the legacy of the kitchen had finally claimed the crown.
