Chapter 37 - The Ghost of the Boulevard

By afternoon, the responsibilities of the corporate towers were left behind as their private Maybach glided silently through the rain-slicked streets of the Gold Coast. The city was bustling with life, unaware of the iron-fisted governance that kept its streets safe and its economy booming.
They were heading toward the historic North Side district—specifically, the old cobblestone alleyway where their paths had first crossed five years ago. Back then, it had been a war zone of rival factions, exploding cars, and bloody alley executions. Today, it was a trendy commercial district lined with upscale cafes, art galleries, and boutiques.
The Maybach pulled over smoothly to the curb. Dante opened the door first, extending a hand to help Serena out into the cool afternoon air. She stepped onto the pavement, pulling her tailored wool coat tightly around her shoulders as she looked up at the brick facade of the building where she had once hidden as a terrified, desperate auditor trying to survive a syndicate war.
"It looks so ordinary now," Serena murmured, her dark, intelligent eyes scanning the peaceful street. "No armed guards, no lookouts, no bodies in the dumpsters."
"Ordinary is what we spent millions of dollars engineering," Dante said quietly, walking up beside her and slipping his hand into hers. He squeezed her fingers gently, grounding her in the present reality. "You turned a slaughterhouse into a neighborhood, Serena. That was your masterpiece."

"Our masterpiece," she corrected him softly, turning her head to meet his dark, unwavering gaze.
They stood there for a moment in the middle of the bustling Chicago sidewalk, completely invisible in plain sight. They were no longer targets, no longer fugitives, and no longer combatants in a secret war. They were the architects of the city, walking through a world they had conquered and reshaped in their own image.
