Chapter 27 - The Golden Hour on the Lake

Late October brought a rare, piercing clarity to the Chicago lakefront, where the surface of Lake Michigan mirrored the brilliant sapphire of an autumn sky. Along the freshly paved pedestrian esplanade near Adler Planetarium, couples and families walked freely, enjoying the crisp afternoon air without a single shadow of the old underworld hanging over their heads.

Serena and Dante walked side by side along the stone seawall, their steps synchronized in an easy, unhurried rhythm. Serena wore a tailored cream trench coat over a charcoal turtleneck, her dark hair blowing slightly in the brisk lake breeze. Dante wore a simple dark wool jacket, his presence commanding yet entirely at ease, stripped of the hyper-vigilant paranoia that had once defined his every public movement.

"The federal task force officially closed the remaining active files on the old syndicate assets this morning," Dante remarked casually, keeping his hands tucked deep into his pockets. "Every offshore account, every dormant shell corporation, every hidden stash of currency—transferred entirely into the public infrastructure trust."

"No appeals from the old guard?" Serena asked, raising an eyebrow with mild amusement.

"What's left of the old guard is either locked away in federal custody or running small-time auto body shops in rural Indiana, pretending they never heard the name Moretti," Dante replied, a dry, humorless smirk touching his lips. "They realized a long time ago that fighting a war against corporate transparency and municipal law is like trying to hold back Lake Michigan with a kitchen sieve."

Serena stopped walking and turned to face him, leaning back against the stone balustrade as she looked out over the endless expanse of blue water. "And you? Do you ever miss the absolute control? The feeling that your word was the only law that mattered in this city?"

Dante stopped beside her, turning his body to block the worst of the cold lake wind. He placed his hands on the stone wall on either side of her hips, boxing her in with gentle, protective possession. "Absolute control is a cage, Serena," he said softly, his blue eyes holding hers with absolute intensity. "I spent my whole life thinking power meant holding a gun to someone's head. You showed me that real power is building a world where no one ever has to look down the barrel of one again."

May you like

Serena reached out, her fingers sliding beneath the lapel of his jacket to rest flat against his chest, feeling the steady, powerful beat of his heart. "We built it together," she whispered.

"We did," Dante agreed, leaning down to capture her lips in a deep, fierce kiss that ignored the watching world entirely.
