Chapter 24 - The Quiet Evening

The sun dipped below the jagged silhouette of the Chicago skyline, painting the clouds in brilliant shades of violet, crimson, and gold. Inside the private kitchen of the Moretti estate, the chaotic energy of the public galas and corporate boardrooms felt a million miles away.

Serena stood by the marble island, wearing a comfortable linen apron over a simple silk blouse, gently stirring a pot of rich, slow-simmering tomato and basil reduction. The rich, comforting aroma filled the room, identical to the very first meal she had ever prepared in this house—the meal that had changed the course of her life forever.

The heavy oak doors opened softly, and Dante walked in, tossing his suit jacket onto a nearby chair and rolling up his sleeves. He walked straight to the kitchen island, leaning his hips against the edge and watching her with absolute, undisturbed peace.

"Smells identical to the first day," Dante noted quietly, resting his chin in his hand.

Serena turned her head, smiling warmly as she grabbed a small wooden spoon, dipped it into the sauce, and held it out toward him. "Quality control," she teased softly. "Tell me if it needs more garlic."

Dante leaned forward, tasting the sauce directly from the spoon. He closed his eyes for a second, savoring the rich, balanced flavors before looking back up at her with a soft, genuine grin. "Absolute perfection."

"And the coffee?" Serena asked, picking up a ceramic mug of dark roast she had prepared specifically for him. "Too much sugar?"

Dante took the mug from her hands, wrapping his fingers around the warm ceramic before taking a slow sip. "Not a single grain too many," he whispered, setting the mug down and reaching out to pull her gently into his arms, resting his hands securely on her waist. "You finally mastered it."

Serena rested her head against his chest, listening to his heartbeat as the evening shadows lengthened across the stone floor. "It only took six months of executive reviews and hostile corporate takeovers."

Dante let out a low, rumbling laugh, pressing a soft kiss to the top of her head. "Well, Madame Chairperson, I'd say the investment paid off."
