Chapter 42 - The Weight of Legacy

By afternoon, the responsibilities of the corporate towers were left behind as they drove north toward the sprawling grounds of Vale House. The estate was a sanctuary of stone, glass, and manicured gardens, shielded from the rest of the world by thick perimeter walls and automated security grids that operated in absolute silence.

They walked through the sunlit courtyards together, the crunch of gravel beneath their feet the only sound breaking the afternoon calm. Marcus met them near the western terrace, holding a secure tablet containing weekly intelligence summaries.

"Everything is quiet across the Midwest," Marcus reported, keeping his voice low and professional. "Interpol confirmed that the last splinter cell of the old European syndicates has been neutralized by local authorities. There are no active threats, no intercepted chatter, and no movement from any rival factions."

Dante waved a hand dismissively, his eyes never leaving the distant horizon of the lake. "File the report in the archive, Marcus. We don't need to read about ghosts anymore."

Marcus nodded respectfully and turned away, leaving them alone once again in the sprawling sanctuary they had carved out of the winter ice.

Serena rested her hand on the stone balustrade, looking out at the endless blue water. "Do you ever think about the night we burned the old ledgers?" she asked softly. "When we finally destroyed the records of every bribe, every extortion debt, and every hit?"

"I think about how clean the fire smelled," Dante replied, stepping closer and wrapping his arm around her shoulders. "We didn't just burn paper, Serena. We burned our past. And what rose from the ashes is entirely ours."
