Inside the executive study, Serena sat at her desk, reviewing the final financial allocations for the Moretti-Serena Foundation. The numbers were staggering—millions of dollars redirected from old syndicate slush funds into public education, urban renewal, and medical infrastructure across the neglected districts of Chicago.
The intercom on her desk chimed softly, and Marcus’s voice came through. "Ms. Vance? The mayor's office is on line one. They want confirmation on the funding for the West Side community center."
Serena pressed the button, her voice cool, collected, and absolute. "Tell the mayor the funds have cleared. Tell him also that I expect the construction timeline to be strictly adhered to. We don't tolerate delays in our city."
"Yes, ma'am," Marcus replied promptly before disconnecting.

Across the room, Dante watched her with a mixture of amusement and deep reverence. "You treat the mayor like an errant middle-manager," he chuckled, walking over to pour two cups of dark-roast coffee.
"Because that is essentially what he is," Serena retorted smoothly, accepting the ceramic mug he handed her. "Power isn't about shouting orders in a dark room, Dante. Power is making sure everyone dances to your rhythm while they think they're playing their own song."
