Chapter 39 - The Sovereign Vow

Dawn broke over Lake Michigan with a breathtaking explosion of color—brilliant shades of bruised purple, slate grey, and liquid gold spilling across the water as the sun climbed above the horizon.

Up in the penthouse suite, the floor-to-ceiling windows offered an unobstructed view of the awakening city. Serena stood by the glass, holding a porcelain cup of black coffee, watching the first rays of sunlight strike the gleaming spires of the financial district.

Behind her, the sliding glass door clicked open, and Dante stepped out onto the balcony, wrapping his heavy cashmere robe around her shoulders before pulling her back against his chest. His arms were strong, steady, and unbreakable—the anchor she had never known she needed, and the weapon she had forged for herself in the fires of the underworld.

"Another day of ruling Chicago," Dante murmured into her hair, a low chuckle rumbling in his chest. "What fresh torture do you have planned for the municipal council today?"

"Nothing malicious," Serena replied innocently, taking a slow sip of her coffee. "Just a routine audit of their zoning regulations to ensure they don't forget who actually owns the water treatment plants."

Dante rested his chin on her shoulder, tightening his arms around her waist as they watched the city hum peacefully below them. "You are a terrifying woman, Serena Vance. And I wouldn't change a single thing about you."

"Good," she whispered, leaning her head back against his chest, closing her eyes as the warmth of his body shielded her from the morning chill. "Because you're stuck with me for the rest of history."
