Chapter 15 - The Trial of the Last Syndicate

The basement vault of the Moretti headquarters—once used to store smuggled contraband, illegal currency, and the physical records of extortion rackets—had been converted into a tribunal room of cold, clinical architecture. The walls of raw, reinforced concrete were stark and unadorned, illuminated by harsh industrial LED panels that cast a glaring, unsparing light across the center of the room.

In the middle of the floor, bound securely to heavy steel chairs with industrial zip-ties, sat Donato Moretti and his surviving enforcers. Their faces were bruised, their tactical gear stripped away to reveal standard civilian clothing, reducing the once-feared street bosses to pathetic, shivering remnants of a forgotten era.

Dante Moretti stood directly in front of them, his hands clasped behind his back, his expression an impassive mask of absolute stone. Beside him stood Serena, holding a thick leather-bound dossier containing every financial transaction, extortion ledger, and violent infraction committed by Donato’s faction over the past twenty years.

Donato spat a glob of blood onto the pristine concrete floor, his eyes blazing with a mixture of fury and desperate defiance. "You think you're a king, Dante? You’re a corporate puppet dancing on the strings of federal prosecutors and city politicians! Without the families, without the blood, without the fear, you are nothing!"

Dante stepped forward, his boots clicking rhythmically against the floor, stopping inches away from Donato’s chair. He leaned down slightly, his voice dropping into a low, terrifyingly calm register. "Fear is a lazy tool, Uncle. It builds nothing that lasts. It only creates enemies who are waiting for the moment your back is turned. Look around you. This room used to hold millions in dirty cash and ledgers of blood debt. Now? It holds a history book that we are about to close forever."

Serena stepped up beside Dante, opening the dossier and flipping through the crisp pages without looking up. Her voice was clear, crisp, and devoid of any emotion, cutting through the damp air of the vault like a surgeon’s scalpel.

"Donato Moretti," Serena recited evenly. "Charges include interstate extortion, racketeering, municipal bribery, and conspiracy to commit domestic terrorism against a registered corporate entity. Under normal circumstances, you would face trial in a federal court where your defense attorneys would spend months exploiting procedural technicalities to secure a reduced sentence."

Donato’s eyes widened slightly at the mention of federal courts, a flicker of panic breaking through his defiant facade. "You wouldn't dare hand us over to the feds. That would expose the entire inner workings of the syndicate—"

"We aren't handing you over to the federal government," Dante interrupted smoothly, standing upright and adjusting the cuffs of his shirt. "Federal prisons are too comfortable for men like you. They give you exercise yards, law libraries, and visitors."

Serena closed the dossier with a sharp, definitive snap that echoed off the concrete walls. She looked down at Donato with eyes as cold and clear as winter ice. "You are going to be handed over to the International Court of Arbitration and the State Financial Crimes Task Force as voluntary witnesses turning over state's evidence in exchange for complete asset forfeiture. Every property, every hidden bank account, every offshore shell company, every scrap of land your family ever acquired through violence—it is all being seized by the state and reallocated into the Moretti Philanthropic Foundation for urban renewal."

Donato lunged forward against his restraints, his face turning purple with rage. "You're stripping us of everything! You're erasing our name!"

"We aren't erasing your name," Dante said quietly, his voice carrying the finality of a tombstone settling into place. "We are simply making sure it is remembered correctly—not as kings who ruled a city, but as a disease that finally found its cure."

He turned away, gesturing to the heavy steel vault doors at the end of the room, which slowly ground open to reveal two federal marshals and a team of state prosecutors waiting in the harsh fluorescent light outside. Serena walked beside Dante toward the exit, their footsteps falling in perfect, synchronized harmony as the ghosts of the old Moretti syndicate were swept away into the dark, never to return.
