Chapter 9 - The Siege

"Get me a helicopter, now!" Lucas roared at Vance as they sprinted out of the penthouse building.
"We're ten minutes away by air!"
Back at the Rourke Estate, the nightmare was unfolding.
A desperate, rogue faction of Volkov loyalists, knowing they were marked for death, had launched a suicide mission on the mansion.
They wanted to hurt Lucas the only way they had left.
Gunfire echoed through the lavish halls of the estate.
Upstairs, Lily woke up to the sound of breaking glass and shouting men.
She was only seven, but she was Hannah Bennett’s daughter.
Hannah had taught her to be smart, to stay quiet, and to hide when the monsters came.
Lily slipped out of the giant bed, clutching the black card tightly in her hand.
She crawled under the bed, pushing herself as far back into the dusty corner as she could.
Heavy boots stomped down the hallway.
The door to the guest room was kicked open, splintering the expensive wood.
Two men with assault rifles stepped inside, sweeping the room with flashlights.
"Check the closets," one of them barked in a thick Russian accent.
"The kid has to be here."
Lily held her breath, tears streaming down her face silently.
She closed her eyes and prayed for the wolf.
Suddenly, a deafening crash shook the entire house.
The sound of helicopter blades roared directly outside the window.
Before the intruders could react, the bedroom window shattered inward in a shower of glass.
Lucas came through the window attached to a tactical rappel line, crashing feet-first into the nearest gunman.
He didn't use a gun.
He was too close to Lily for crossfire.
He pulled a heavy combat knife from his belt and moved like a shadow.
In three seconds of pure, terrifying violence, both intruders were dead on the floor.
Lucas stood up, breathing heavily, his suit ruined, covered in the blood of his enemies.
"Lily!" he yelled, his voice cracking with desperation.
"Lily, where are you!"
A tiny sniffle came from under the bed.
Lucas dropped his knife and slid to his knees, peering into the darkness.
"It's me, sweetheart," he said softly, tears finally breaking through his hardened eyes.
"The wolf is here."
May you like
Lily crawled out, throwing her tiny arms around his neck and burying her face in his shoulder.
He held her tightly, crushing her to his chest, realizing that in saving her, she had actually saved him.
