Chapter 15 - The Gala Trap

Victor Sterling was hosting the charity event of the year at the Field Museum. It was a glittering masquerade, heavily guarded, crawling with the city’s elite and the Commission’s top members. Sterling intended to use the night to rally the other families against Lucas. At 9:00 PM, the massive bronze doors of the museum swung open. The string quartet abruptly stopped playing. Every head turned. Lucas Rourke walked in, wearing a bespoke black tuxedo. Beside him, holding his hand, was Lily, dressed in a stunning dark green velvet dress that matched her mother’s eyes. She wore a small, silver wolf pendant around her neck. Whispers erupted across the marble hall. Lucas never brought his daughter into public syndicate affairs. Sterling adjusted his mask, a smug smile creeping onto his face. He motioned to his men hidden in the shadows of the upper balconies. He brought the kid, Sterling thought. He’s vulnerable. Lucas walked straight through the crowd, parting the sea of billionaires and mob bosses like a ghost. He stopped right in front of Sterling. "Lucas," Sterling smiled, extending a hand. "I’m surprised you came. And you brought your... vulnerability." Lucas didn't take the hand. "I brought my heir, Victor," Lucas said, his voice carrying perfectly across the silent room. "I wanted her to see what a dead man looks like."
