Chapter 4 - The Ambush

Metal groaned and sparks flew as the SUV’s reinforced bumper scraped against a concrete barrier.
Vance’s evasive maneuver barely saved them from being crushed by the speeding garbage truck.
Before the SUV could fully recover, three dark sedans boxed them in on the narrow street.
"Ambush!" Vance shouted, pulling a heavy tactical pistol from his shoulder holster.
Lucas didn't panic.
He unbuckled his seatbelt in a flash and threw his massive body over Lily, shielding her completely.
"Keep your head down, little wolf," he whispered in her ear.
She didn't scream, but he could feel her tiny heart hammering against his chest like a trapped bird.
Automatic gunfire erupted, shattering the tranquility of the evening.
Heavy caliber rounds slammed into the bulletproof glass of the SUV, leaving deep, white spiderweb cracks.
The armor was holding, but it wouldn't last forever against sustained fire.
"It’s the Volkovs," Vance grunted, firing back through a specialized gun port in the door.
"They brought heavy hitters, boss!"
Lucas’s mind raced with cold, terrifying clarity.
This was not a random hit.
The Volkovs knew exactly where he was, exactly which vehicle he was in, and exactly when to strike.
Someone had sold him out.
"Drive through them, Vance," Lucas commanded, his voice devoid of fear.
"But the engine block—"
"I said drive through them!" Lucas roared.
Vance slammed his foot on the gas pedal.
The massive, reinforced engine of the SUV roared like a wounded beast.
They rammed into the nearest sedan, folding its doors inward and pushing it violently out of the way.
Gunfire continued to rain down, taking out one of their rear tires.
But the momentum was enough.
The SUV broke the blockade, limping but accelerating away from the ambush site.
Lucas stayed over Lily until they reached the safety of the underground expressway.
When he finally sat up, he checked her carefully for any injuries.
"Are you hurt?" he asked, his hands shaking for the first time in his adult life.
Lily shook her head, clutching the black bank card tightly against her chest.
"I knew the wolf would protect me," she said bravely.
Lucas looked at the bullet-scarred glass, his eyes burning with a demonic fury.

Someone had just tried to murder his child.
The lockdown of Chicago was about to begin.
