Chapter 8 - The Fire of Chicago

The city of Chicago burned that night.

It wasn't a fire of wood and brick, but a fire of bullets, blood, and absolute vengeance.

The Rourke Syndicate moved like a well-oiled machine of death.

At midnight, three Volkov smuggling warehouses on the docks exploded simultaneously, sending pillars of fire into the dark sky.

By 1:00 AM, the top four lieutenants of the Russian mob were found dead in their luxury apartments.

Lucas did not lead from the rear.

He was the tip of the spear, a heartless man executing a flawless, brutal tactical strike.

He kicked down the door of Sergei Volkov’s private penthouse just as the Russian boss was packing a bag to flee.

Sergei’s bodyguards barely had time to raise their weapons before Lucas and Vance dropped them with surgical precision.

Sergei fell to his knees, holding his hands up in terror.

"Rourke! Wait! We can make a deal!" the Russian screamed, blood splattering across his expensive silk shirt.

Lucas walked slowly across the expensive Persian rug, his rifle aimed squarely at Sergei’s chest.

"You tortured a nurse in Cicero three days ago," Lucas said, his voice echoing in the grand penthouse.

"You beat her to death looking for a black card."

Sergei swallowed hard, realizing exactly what he had unleashed.

"Marcus told us she had your financial codes," Sergei pleaded.

"We didn't know about the kid, I swear!"

"If we knew she was your blood, we never would have touched her!"

Lucas stared down at the pleading man, feeling no pity, no remorse, and no hesitation.

"Hannah Bennett was my blood, too," Lucas whispered.

He pulled the trigger twice.

The Russian boss collapsed to the floor, dead before he even hit the carpet.

Lucas turned away without a second glance.

"Burn it," Lucas told his men.

"Burn the building, burn the cars, burn everything."

As he walked out of the penthouse, his phone buzzed.

It was the head of his estate security.

"Boss, we have a problem," the guard said, panic clear in his voice.

"A strike team bypassed the outer perimeter."

"They're inside the house."

Lucas’s heart stopped completely.

"Lily," he breathed out, true fear gripping him for the first time in his life.
