Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

The armored black SUV glided through the streets of downtown Chicago like a shark through deep water.
Inside the quiet cabin, Lily sat buckled into a leather seat, eating a warm pastry that Vance had magically procured.
Lucas watched her, analyzing every detail of her face.
He had built an empire on logic, violence, and absolute control.
Now, a seven-year-old girl in a torn yellow dress had instantly become his greatest strength and his most fatal weakness.
His phone buzzed, vibrating against the mahogany console.
It was Marcus, his underboss and right-hand man for the last five years.
"Boss, I’m hearing rumors that you locked down Hancock Trust over a street kid," Marcus said, his voice laced with confusion.
"She isn't a street kid, Marcus," Lucas replied coldly.
"She is my daughter."
There was a long, heavy silence on the other end of the line.
"Your daughter?" Marcus finally repeated, forcing a nervous chuckle.
"Lucas, this is a dangerous time to discover a secret family."
"The Volkov Bratva has been pushing our supply lines in the south side all week."
"If the Russians find out you have a kid, they will use her to tear your heart out."
Lucas stared out the tinted window, his reflection merging with the passing city lights.
"Let them try," Lucas whispered.
"I will mount their heads on the gates of the estate."
He hung up the phone, not missing the subtle hesitation in Marcus's voice.
Paranoia was a survival trait in Lucas’s world, and right now, his instincts were screaming.
Only three people knew Hannah even existed: Lucas, Vance, and Marcus.
If Hannah had died under suspicious circumstances, the circle of suspects was incredibly small.
"Mr. Rourke," Lily said, pulling his attention away from the bloody thoughts in his head.
"Can I call you Lucas?"
He looked at her, his hardened features softening immediately.
"You can call me Dad, if you want," he offered gently.
Lily thought about it for a moment, her brow furrowing in concentration.
"Mommy said my dad was a king," she said matter-of-factly.
"But I think I like Lucas for now."
He smiled, a genuine, rare expression that would have terrified his enemies.
"Lucas is perfectly fine, Lily."
Suddenly, the heavy SUV swerved violently to the right.
Tires screamed against the asphalt as Vance yanked the steering wheel.

A massive, blacked-out garbage truck had just blown through a red light, aiming directly for their passenger side.
"Hold on!" Vance roared.
