Chapter 1 - The Descent

Lucas did not wait for his security team.

He bypassed the velvet ropes, his heavy footsteps echoing against the marble floor of the Hancock Meridian Trust.

The two attorneys trailing him stumbled, confused by the sudden change in their client’s cold demeanor.

Down in the lobby, Harold Whitcomb was holding the battered black card up to the light, a smug smile plastered across his face.

"A piece of black plastic," Harold sneered, loudly enough for the woman in pearls to hear.

"I bet you found this in a dumpster, didn't you, little girl?" Harold asked.

The little girl named Lily stood her ground, her small fists clenched at her sides.

"My mommy said it would take care of me," she whispered, her voice trembling but unbroken.

The woman in pearls let out another cruel, mocking laugh.

"Security, please remove this street urchin before she soils the rugs," the woman demanded, waving a manicured hand.

A burly security guard stepped forward, reaching out to grab the child’s fragile shoulder.

"Touch her, and you will never use that hand again."

The voice sliced through the bank like a freezing wind, instantly killing the laughter in the room.

Every head turned toward the grand staircase.

Lucas Rourke descended the final steps, his dark eyes fixed entirely on the little girl in the faded yellow dress.

The air in the room seemed to evaporate as Chicago’s most dangerous man stepped into the light.

Harold’s face drained of color, his arrogant smile melting into absolute terror.

"Mr. Rourke," Harold stammered, dropping his hands to his sides.

"We… we didn't know you were still on the premises, sir."

Lucas ignored the trembling bank manager and walked straight to the little girl.

He dropped to one knee, uncaring that his thousand-dollar suit brushed against the muddy floor.

Up close, the resemblance was like a physical blow to his chest.

She had Hannah’s striking emerald eyes, but the sharp, stubborn line of her jaw was entirely his own.

"What is your name, sweetheart?" Lucas asked, his voice softer than any of his men had ever heard it.

"Lily," she answered, looking at him with cautious curiosity.

"Lily," he repeated, tasting the name, feeling a strange, violent protectiveness flare inside his blood.

He stood up slowly, his towering frame casting a long shadow over the banking counter.

"Run the card, Harold," Lucas commanded, his voice dead and hollow.

"Sir, it’s obviously a fake," Harold protested, sweating profusely.

"Run it, or I will buy this bank right now just to fire you," Lucas said.

Trembling, Harold swiped the battered black plastic through the highest-tier encrypted terminal.

The machine beeped once, a sharp, piercing sound.

Then, the entire screen flashed a brilliant, blinding gold.

Harold gasped, falling backward into his leather chair as he read the name on the account.

It was an absolute access card, a ghost account tied directly to the Rourke Syndicate’s primary treasury.

The account balance was virtually limitless, and the secondary authorized user listed on the screen made Harold want to vomit.

"The account holder..." Harold choked out, looking at Lily with wide, terrified eyes.

"The secondary user is Lily Rourke," Harold finished, the silence in the bank becoming deafening.
