Chapter 16 - Checkmate

Sterling laughed, but the sound was brittle. "Are you threatening me in front of the entire Commission, Rourke? My men have this room surrounded." "Do they?" Lucas asked calmly. Sterling raised two fingers to signal his snipers on the balcony. Nothing happened. Sterling signaled again, his heart skipping a beat. High above them, in the shadows of the dinosaur exhibits, a heavy body plummeted over the railing, crashing onto the marble floor. It was Sterling’s head of security. Vance stepped out into the light on the balcony, wiping a bloody blade with a white handkerchief. Panic rippled through the crowd. The other Commission bosses stepped back, realizing they were in the middle of a war zone. "While you were busy pouring champagne, Victor, my men took over your shipping routes. We bought out your police protection. We froze your offshore accounts," Lucas stated, stepping closer. "I know about the hospital in Cicero." Sterling’s face went chalk white. The smug arrogance shattered into pure, primal fear. "Lucas, wait, you don't understand—" "I understand everything," Lucas interrupted. He looked down at Lily. "Close your eyes, sweetheart." Lily didn't close her eyes. She stared right at the man who had ordered her mother's death. "No, Dad," she said, her voice steady. "I want to watch."
