Chapter 17 - The Fall of Sterling

Sterling panicked. In a desperate, cowardly move, he lunged forward, pulling a hidden derringer from his tuxedo jacket, aiming wildly at Lily. He never even got to cock the hammer. Lucas moved with the brutal efficiency of a apex predator. He caught Sterling’s wrist, snapping the bone with a sickening crack. Sterling screamed, dropping the gun. Before Sterling could fall, Lucas grabbed him by the throat, lifting him off his feet just as he had done to Marcus months ago. "You sent animals to beat her in an alley," Lucas whispered, his voice vibrating with a demonic fury. "She was the only pure thing in this rotten city, and you destroyed her for money." "Please..." Sterling choked, kicking his expensive Italian shoes in the air. "Look at my daughter," Lucas commanded, tightening his grip. "Look at the face of the girl you orphaned." Sterling’s bloodshot eyes rolled sideways, meeting Lily’s cold, emerald gaze. She didn't look away. She didn't flinch. Lucas crushed Sterling's windpipe. He threw the lifeless body onto the marble floor at the feet of the other Commission bosses. Silence descended on the Field Museum. No one dared to breathe.
