Chapter 11 - The Princess of Chicago

Six months had passed since the Volkov Bratva was erased from the map. The Rourke Estate had transformed. The cold, empty halls were now filled with the faint sounds of piano lessons and the occasional echo of a child’s laughter. But outside those walls, the underworld was restless. Lucas sat at the head of the obsidian table in his downtown high-rise. Across from him sat the representatives of the Midwest Commission—the five oldest crime families in the region. "With all due respect, Lucas," an older boss named Carmine rasped, "you’ve gone quiet. You’re turning down the weapons trade out of Detroit. You’re rejecting the casino expansions." "I am diversifying our legitimate assets," Lucas replied, his voice a low, dangerous rumble. "Word on the street is you’ve lost your teeth," a sharp-suited younger boss, Victor Sterling, sneered. "They say the big bad wolf traded his fangs for a father-of-the-year mug." The room temperature seemed to drop ten degrees. Lucas slowly leaned forward, his dark eyes locking onto Victor. "My teeth are just fine, Victor. But if you’d like a demonstration, I can have Vance remove yours." Victor swallowed hard, looking away. "Meeting adjourned," Lucas commanded. As the bosses filed out, Vance stepped out of the shadows. "Sterling is plotting something, boss. He thinks you're weak because of Lily." Lucas stared out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the sprawling city below. "Let him plot. The moment he steps out of line, I will remind this city exactly why they fear the dark."
