Chapter 13 - The Rabbit's Secret

That evening, it rained in Chicago—the same heavy, relentless rain that fell the night Hannah died. Lily was sitting on the floor of her massive bedroom, going through the single cardboard box of belongings they had salvaged from her old apartment. She pulled out her favorite stuffed rabbit. It was worn and missing an eye. As she hugged it, she felt something hard pressed against the stuffing in the rabbit's belly. Frowning, Lily tugged at a loose seam on the back. Her small fingers pulled out a tiny, silver USB drive wrapped in a piece of notebook paper. She unfolded the paper. It was her mother’s handwriting. If you are reading this, Lily, it means I am gone. Give this to the wolf. Only the wolf. Lily’s heart pounded. She ran barefoot down the grand staircase, bursting into Lucas’s private study. Lucas was in the middle of a tense phone call, but the moment he saw Lily’s pale face, he dropped the receiver. "What is it? Are you hurt?" he asked, rushing to her side. Lily handed him the piece of paper and the silver drive. "Mommy hid this," Lily whispered. Lucas read the note, his jaw tightening so hard the muscles jumped. "Vance," Lucas called out, his voice echoing through the estate. "Bring me the decryptor. Now."
