Chapter 12 - The Elite

The Winston Academy of Chicago was an exclusive fortress for the children of billionaires, politicians, and CEOs. It was Lily’s first week. She wore the pristine plaid uniform, her blonde hair tied in a neat ribbon. She was brilliant, but she didn't fit in. She had spent the first seven years of her life in a cramped Cicero apartment, not a penthouse. During recess, a tall, arrogant boy named Preston approached her. His father was a state senator. "My dad says your dad is a criminal," Preston sneered, kicking dirt onto Lily’s polished black shoes. "He says you belong in a dumpster, not at Winston." Lily didn't cry. Hannah had taught her to be strong, and Lucas had taught her not to flinch. She looked calmly at her dirty shoes, then up at Preston. "My dad says politicians are just criminals who wear cheaper suits," Lily replied evenly. Preston’s face flushed red. He reached out to shove her, but before his hand could make contact, a massive shadow fell over them. Vance, standing at seven feet of pure muscle, stepped between them. He didn't say a word, just stared down at the boy with cold, dead eyes. Preston whimpered and ran. Lucas stepped out from the walkway, kneeling beside Lily to brush the dirt off her shoe with his silk pocket square. "Are you okay, little wolf?" he asked softly. "I didn't need Vance, Dad," she said matter-of-factly. "I was going to sweep his leg. Like Vance taught me." Lucas chuckled, a dark, proud sound. "Next time, I'll let you."
