Chapter 77 - The Twilight Symphony of the Estate

As the afternoon sun began its slow, majestic descent toward the western horizon, the sky transformed into a breathtaking canvas of burning amber, bruised violet, and deep crimson. The lake waters mirrored the fading light, turning into a sheet of liquid gold that shimmered gently against the shoreline cliffs.
Inside the grand kitchen, preparations for a quiet family dinner were underway. The estate’s master chef, assisted by Ruth—who had long since retired from her grueling schedule as head housekeeper but still lived comfortably on the estate grounds as an honored family elder—was preparing a feast of roasted lamb, fresh garden herbs, and artisan pastries.
Damien and Ellie stood together on the wide stone terrace, wrapped in the quiet intimacy of the deepening twilight. Damien’s arms were banded securely around Ellie’s waist, his chin resting lightly on her shoulder as they watched the stars begin to pierce the darkening vault of the sky above Lake Michigan.
"The foundation gala is next Tuesday," Ellie murmured, leaning back against his chest, letting the familiar, comforting heat of his body anchor her completely. "The mayor’s office confirmed they’re presenting the community service award to Leo and Dr. Vance."
"They earned it," Damien replied quietly, his deep voice rumbling against her spine. "Though I suspect Vance is still secretly terrified that I’m going to audit his hospital procurement budget if he steps out of line."
Ellie let out a soft, melodious laugh, turning around in his embrace to wrap her arms loosely around his neck. "You’re retired from the intimidation business, Damien Moretti. You’re a philanthropist now. You have to be charming and approachable."
"I am exceptionally charming," Damien deadpanned with a straight face, though a faint, wicked sparkle in his dark eyes betrayed his amusement. "Ask anyone in the foundation office. They tremble with delight whenever I walk into the room."
"They tremble because you stare at them like you're evaluating their tactical combat readiness," Ellie teased, standing up on her tiptoes to press a lingering kiss to his jawline.
Damien’s arms tightened around her instantly, his playful demeanor melting away into an expression of profound, absolute devotion. The vast, empty void that had once defined his existence before he met her was long gone, replaced by a universe anchored entirely by the woman in his arms and the children laughing inside the house.

"I spent my entire life building walls, Ellie," Damien whispered, his voice dropping into a register of raw, unfiltered honesty. "I thought power was a shield, and violence was an answer. But standing here with you, looking at everything we’ve built out of the ashes of our past... I finally understand what real strength looks like."
"It looks like love," Ellie whispered back, her dark eyes shining with unshed tears of pure happiness. "It looks like staying."
