Chapter 55 - Uncharted Waters

The afternoon sun cast long, amber shadows across the manicured lawns of the Moretti estate as a sleek, unfamiliar black car pulled up the gravel driveway. For a brief second, the old instincts flared; Vincent instinctively stepped in front of Maya, and Damien’s hand dropped toward where his holster used to rest before he remembered he had left it upstairs.
The car door opened, and a distinguished man in a crisp charcoal suit stepped out. It wasn't an assassin, nor a rival boss, nor an emissary from the underworld. It was Arthur Vance, the senior federal prosecutor who had spent the last three years building the structural dismantling case against the syndicates—a man who had operated as a reluctant, high-level ally in Damien’s final chess match.
"Vance," Damien said, stepping off the veranda to meet him halfway across the gravel drive. "I didn't expect you to make house calls."
"It's not an official call, Moretti," Vance said, offering a tight, professional smile as he adjusted his briefcase. "Just tying up loose ends. The final asset transfers cleared the federal registry an hour ago. The syndicate holdings are officially liquidated, and the oversight committee has formally closed the file."
"Done?" Damien asked, seeking confirmation of the finality.
"Done," Vance confirmed. "As of right now, you are legally and structurally clean. Your assets are untainted, your investments are fully diversified into legitimate commercial sectors, and your name no longer appears on any federal watchlists." He paused, looking around the sprawling estate with a hint of genuine respect. "It’s a different kind of kingdom you’ve built here, Damien. Make sure you keep it that way."
"I plan to," Damien replied.
Vance nodded once, turned back to his car, and drove away, leaving behind a profound stillness. There was no paperwork left to sign, no signatures required in blood or ink. The ledger was finally balanced.
As Damien walked back toward the house, Ellie met him at the bottom of the stone steps. She had seen the exchange from the library window, and the expression on her face was one of absolute, radiant relief.
"He confirmed it?" she asked softly.
"It's over," Damien said, pulling her close against him. "We are completely free."
The news quickly rippled through the household. When Vincent and Noah ran up from the lawn, breathless and laughing, they found Maya already pouring a bottle of rare vintage champagne in the grand salon—a bottle Vincent had been saving for an occasion that he had once feared would never come.
"To freedom," Vincent announced, raising his glass high as the afternoon light caught the sparkling amber liquid.

"To family," Ellie added, clinking her glass against Damien's.
"And to no more rules!" Noah shouted happily, raising his glass of sparkling cider, earning a mock-scandalized look from Vincent that sent everyone into a fit of genuine, carefree laughter.
