Chapter 50 - The Midnight Meeting

The old municipal pier on the South Side of Chicago was a relic of a bygone industrial era—rusted iron beams, rotting wooden planks, and the constant, rhythmic slapping of dark water against concrete pylons.

A single overhead sodium streetlight buzzed and flickered, casting a sickly yellow glow across the abandoned boathouse.

At precisely midnight, a sleek black sedan pulled up to the edge of the pier. The engine cut off, and the driver's side door opened.

Damien Moretti stepped out into the damp, chilling night air. He wore a dark wool overcoat, his hands slid casually into his pockets, his posture relaxed yet radiating an unmistakable, lethal aura of absolute control.

Arthur Vance was already standing near the edge of the pier, leaning against the rusted railing with his hands shoved into his trench coat, looking out over the dark, churning water.

“I wasn't entirely sure you’d show up, Moretti,” Vance said, not turning around until Damien was standing just a few feet away.

“Cut the preamble, Vance,” Damien replied, his voice deep, smooth, and laced with an icy chill. “You wanted a conversation. We’re having it. What’s your price to make this go away?”

Vance turned around, a triumphant, self-satisfied grin spreading across his face. “You think everything has a price tag, don't you? You think you can buy your innocence just like you bought your hospitals and your clean record.”

“Everything has a price, Counselor,” Damien said, taking a slow step forward, his dark eyes locking onto Vance’s with a piercing intensity that made the prosecutor instinctively take a half-step back. “The only question is whether you’re willing to pay the cost of what happens if you push me too far.”

Vance swallowed hard, but pressed on, pulling a thin digital recorder from his coat pocket. “All I want is the truth on record. Admit how you dismantled the Salvatore network. Admit that the Moretti empire didn't vanish—it just went underground.”

Damien stared at the recorder, then back up at Vance’s face. A slow, terrifyingly calm smile touched the corners of Damien’s mouth.

“You want the truth, Arthur?” Damien murmured, stepping so close that the prosecutor could feel the freezing air radiating off his coat. “The truth is that empires are built on blood and fear, but they only survive when the men who built them finally realize that nothing they conquer is worth losing the people they love.”

Before Vance could respond, the sound of approaching sirens echoed softly in the distance, cutting through the heavy silence of the night.
