Chapter 44 - Shadows on the Horizon

While the sunlight streamed through the dining room windows and the laughter of family echoed across the Moretti estate, miles away in the heart of downtown Chicago, a very different kind of conversation was taking place in a dimly lit office high above the financial district.
Arthur Vance—not the doctor from St. Jude’s, but a federal prosecutor specializing in organized crime syndicates—sat behind a sleek steel desk strewn with old intelligence files, digital drives, and handwritten notes.
Across from him sat Special Agent Miller of the FBI’s elite anti-racketeering division, looking exhausted and frustrated.
“I’m telling you, Vance, it’s a ghost chase,” Miller sighed, rubbing his temples as he tossed a thick manila folder onto the desk. “We’ve spent three years auditing every legitimate front company, construction firm, and shipping manifest tied to the Moretti name. Every single dollar checks out. The properties have been transferred, the shell corporations dissolved, and Damien Moretti is legally operating as one of the largest philanthropic donors in the state.”
Arthur Vance leaned back in his leather chair, tapping a silver pen against his chin. His eyes narrowed as he stared at a photograph of Damien and Ellie stepping out of a charity gala months earlier.
“Nobody walks away from an empire like that, Miller,” Vance said quietly, his voice laced with stubborn skepticism. “Men like Damien Moretti don't just retire to bake cookies and fund pediatric clinics. Blood money doesn't wash off that easily.”
“Call it what you want, Arthur, but the facts are the facts,” Miller insisted, leaning forward. “The Salvatore faction tried to hit him three years ago, and their entire network imploded overnight. Since then? Absolute silence. No turf wars, no retaliatory hits, no illegal imports. If he’s still running an underground syndicate, he’s doing it so cleanly that he’s practically invisible.”
“Or,” Vance murmured, his eyes flashing with a cold, analytical ambition, “he’s consolidated his power so completely that he doesn't need to get his hands dirty anymore. He’s made himself untouchable by hiding behind hospitals, university boards, and a very public, picture-perfect marriage.”
Miller shook his head, standing up from his chair and grabbing his coat. “You’re chasing ghosts, Arthur. The attorney general’s office closed this file six months ago, and you should too. Let the man live his life. Chicago has enough real monsters without us inventing new ones out of retired mob bosses.”

With that, Agent Miller turned and walked out of the office, leaving Vance alone with his files.
Vance stared down at the photograph of Damien Moretti, a dark, competitive glint in his eye. “You think you won, Damien,” Vance whispered to the empty room. “Every empire leaves a crack. I just have to find mine.”
