Chapter 66 - The Solstice Gathering

Midsummer arrived at the Moretti estate with a burst of brilliant color and long, sun-drenched afternoons that stretched far into the evening. The sprawling lawns were a vibrant, manicured green, and the flower beds flanking the stone pathways overflowed with blooming lavender, white hydrangeas, and deep crimson roses. For the first time since leaving their old lives behind, the household decided to open the heavy iron gates just a fraction wider—not to welcome strangers from the underworld, but to host a quiet, intimate summer solstice dinner for a few local neighbors they had befriended in the surrounding Winnetka community.

Damien stood on the flagstone patio behind the mansion, watching Vincent and Noah string delicate fairy lights through the sprawling branches of the ancient oak trees that shaded the dining terrace. The rustic wooden table, built by Vincent the previous autumn, was already draped in crisp linen and set with heavy silver and crystal glasses that caught the amber glow of the setting sun.

"You look entirely out of place holding a spool of electrical wire, Vincent," Damien teased, walking over with a tray of iced lemonade.

Vincent paused, wiping a bead of sweat from his forehead with the back of his forearm. "Civilian integration, boss. Next thing you know, I’ll be volunteering for the local PTA or judging the neighborhood pumpkin-carving contest."

"Don't push your luck," Damien chuckled, handing him a glass. "Though I admit, the fairy lights are a nice touch. Ellie insisted."

"And when Ellie insists on atmosphere, the entire tactical infrastructure shifts accordingly," Vincent replied, taking a grateful sip.

Inside the grand kitchen, Ellie and Maya were putting the finishing touches on a menu featuring local seasonal produce, artisan cheeses, and grilled meats. There was no pretense of corporate catering or armed security details checking the deliveries. Every ingredient had been purchased from the local farmers' market down the road, carried back in the trunk of Maya’s sedan without a second glance from anyone.

As the sun began its slow descent toward the western horizon, painting the sky in breathtaking strokes of peach, violet, and gold, the first guests arrived. Dr. Evans, the retired pediatrician who lived down the lane, and his wife stepped out of their sedan, greeted warmly by Ellie at the front entrance. There were no hushed whispers, no hidden agendas, and no evaluating threats. Just neighbors sharing a glass of wine on a quiet lakeside evening.

Damien watched from the edge of the terrace as Ellie laughed at something Dr. Evans said, her face radiant in the warm twilight. The transformation was complete. They weren't fugitives hiding in plain sight; they were part of the fabric of this peaceful community. As dusk finally settled and the fairy lights flickered to life overhead, Damien raised his glass in a silent toast to the quiet miracle of their new life.
