Chapter 76 - Whispers in the Orchard

While the men debated logistics and medical outreach upstairs, Ellie and Maya took a leisurely stroll down through the blossoming apple orchards that stretched toward the northern boundary of the estate. The trees were heavy with tight, pink-budded blossoms that fluttered down like snow whenever a gentle gust of spring wind swept across the lake.

Walking side by side, the two women shared a quiet, unspoken understanding forged through years of shared trauma, hidden identities, and ultimate survival.

"Do you ever look back?" Maya asked softly, her gaze fixed on the distant horizon where the glassy surface of Lake Michigan met the bright spring sky. "At the safe houses in Ohio, the fake names, the constant terror of wondering if someone was going to kick down the door?"

Ellie paused, reaching out to gently touch the rough bark of an apple tree before plucking a loose petal from the grass.

"Sometimes," Ellie admitted quietly. "Not with fear anymore, Maya. Just... with a sense of wonder. When I was working double shifts at the clinic, eating instant noodles in a freezing apartment, I used to pray for a way out. I never imagined the way out would look like a mafia kingpin crashing into my life in a storm."

Maya laughed softly, the sound light and musical. "And now look at us. We’re discussing charity galas, organic gardening yields, and school PTA meetings. If someone had told my twenty-year-old self that I’d be living in a lakefront fortress married to Damien Moretti’s most trusted enforcer, I would have checked myself into a psychiatric ward."

"We survived because we had each other," Ellie said firmly, turning to look Maya directly in the eye. "And because we refused to let the darkness define who we were. You protected my family when everything was falling apart, Maya. You kept Maya and Emma safe when the world was burning."

"We were all just trying to keep the light on in a very dark room," Maya replied, her voice thick with emotion. She smiled, linking her arm through Ellie’s. "And now? The house is so full of light it practically blinds you."

As they walked back toward the main house, the distant sound of Noah’s laughter drifted across the lawn, mingling with the barking of the golden retriever and the warm, golden sunlight that bathed the entire estate in an unbreakable aura of peace.
