Chapter 23 - The Next Chapter

Three days later, the private medical transport carrying Leo, Ellie, and Damien touched down smoothly at Midway International Airport in Chicago.
Instead of returning to the small, cramped apartment in Queens that Ellie had rented for years, the convoy of armored vehicles drove straight through the iron security gates of the sprawling Moretti estate on the outskirts of the city.
The estate was a masterpiece of old-world architecture and modern security—surrounded by acres of private wooded grounds, manicured gardens, and a grand limestone mansion that looked more like a European chateau than a mob boss's headquarters.
As the car pulled up to the grand front entrance, Leo stared out the window with wide, disbelieving eyes, leaning heavily on his crutches.
“Wait… is this where you live now?” Leo asked, turning to look at Ellie as she helped him out of the vehicle. “El, did you accidentally marry a duke or a Bond villain?”
Ellie laughed, a bright, clear sound that carried across the courtyard. “Something a little more complicated than a duke, Leo. Let’s call it… aggressive real estate management.”
Standing on the front steps, waiting to welcome them, was Damien. He had traded his usual heavy corporate suit for a dark charcoal sweater and slacks, looking approachable yet possessing that undeniable, commanding presence that made everyone around him stand a little straighter.
He walked down the stone steps, offering his hand to Leo with a respectful, easy grin.
“Welcome home, Leo,” Damien said, shaking the teenager’s hand firmly. “I hear you gave the nursing staff in Baltimore a run for their money.”
Leo blinked, staring up at Damien with a mix of awe and teenage skepticism. “You’re… you’re Damien Moretti. The guy who owns half the shipping ports in the Midwest.”
“That’s me,” Damien nodded, his eyes shifting affectionately toward Ellie. “And starting today, you live here. Your own suite in the East Wing, private physical therapy staff on call, and a kitchen stocked with every cheeseburger in Illinois.”
Leo looked from Damien to Ellie, his jaw slightly dropping. Then a slow, impressed grin spread across his face. “Okay. Nailing the real estate upgrade. I approve.”
Ellie rolled her eyes, shaking her head affectionately as she linked her arm through Damien’s.
Later that evening, after Leo was comfortably settled into his new suite and asleep from exhaustion, Ellie and Damien stood out on the stone balcony of the penthouse suite, looking out over the sprawling gardens bathed in the silver light of a full moon.
The Chicago wind was cool, carrying the crisp scent of approaching winter, but standing beside Damien, Ellie felt warmer than she had in her entire life.
Damien wrapped his arms around her waist from behind, resting his chin softly on her shoulder as she leaned back against his solid chest.
“You did it,” Damien murmured into the night air. “Your brother is safe, his future is secure, and you’re finally home.”
Ellie turned in his arms, wrapping her hands around his neck and looking up into his dark, unwavering eyes.
“I didn't do it alone,” she whispered, smiling softly. “You gave me the strength to fight when I had nothing left, Damien. What happens next?”
Damien smiled—a rare, radiant expression that completely transformed his hard features into something breathtaking. He reached into his coat pocket, pulling out a small velvet box, and opened it to reveal a magnificent, flawless diamond ring that sparkled brilliantly under the moonlight.
“What happens next,” Damien said, his voice deep, steady, and filled with absolute promise, “is that we build an empire together. Not of syndicates or territories, Ellie… but of a life that belongs entirely to us.”

Tears of pure happiness glistened in Ellie’s eyes as she looked from the ring up into his face.
“Yes,” she whispered, before pressing her lips to his in a deep, passionate kiss that sealed their past, their present, and every tomorrow waiting in the light.
