Chapter 43 - A Gathering at the Table

By noon, the grand dining room of the Moretti estate was filled with the warm, clinking sounds of silverware, crystal glasses, and lively conversation.
The long mahogany dining table was laden with a lavish spread prepared by the estate's master chef, though the atmosphere was refreshingly casual. At the center of the table sat Ellie and Damien, flanked by Leo, Maya, Vincent, and young Noah, who was excitedly recounting every detail of his morning soccer match.
“And then I kicked it right past the lawn chair—which was totally playing goalie, by the way—and it went straight into the bushes!” Noah declared enthusiastically, waving his fork with a piece of roasted chicken on the end.
“Sounds like a world-class goal to me,” Leo laughed, taking a sip of sparkling water. “Though I think your defense needs some work if a lawn chair managed to block your initial angle.”
“Hey!” Noah grinned defensively, earning a round of affectionate chuckles from around the table.
Ellie looked down the long table, her heart swelling with a profound, overwhelming sense of gratitude. She caught Damien’s eye across the corner of the table. He was watching her with that intense, unwavering gaze that never failed to make her breath hitch, no matter how many years passed.
“Penny for your thoughts, Mrs. Moretti,” Damien murmured across the table, his voice carrying clearly beneath the chatter.
“I was just thinking about how loud our house is now,” Ellie smiled softly, resting her chin in her hand. “Remember when the only sound in this place was the wind hitting the glass and the ticking of the grandfather clock?”
“It was a mausoleum,” Damien replied without hesitation, his dark eyes softening. “You brought the life back into it, Ellie. Every single room.”
“We all did,” Maya chimed in, raising her water glass toward Ellie with a warm, sisterly smile. “None of us would be sitting around this table today if we hadn't decided to stop running from our pasts and start fighting for our futures.”
“Hear, hear,” Vincent agreed, lifting his glass to join the toast, followed instantly by Leo and Noah, who banged his juice glass against the table with infectious enthusiasm.
“To family,” Damien said, raising his glass high, his voice ringing with absolute finality and deep, abiding peace.

“To family,” the table echoed in unison.
The glasses clicked together in a harmonious chorus, ringing out like bells in the sunlit dining room as the laughter resumed, filling every corner of the estate with a warmth that no winter storm could ever touch.
