Chapter 37 - The Legacy of the Moretti Name

Inside the grand ballroom, away from the cool night air of the terrace, the celebration continued with an easy, unforced elegance.

Leo stood near the Northwestern faculty table, engaged in a spirited debate with a professor of theoretical physics regarding quantum computing algorithms, proving how far he had traveled from the desperate, debt-ridden shipping clerk who once skimmed manifests on Cermak Road. Across the room, Ruth, the steadfast head housekeeper who had kept the estate running through its darkest winters, was laughing with Mrs. Gable as they watched Noah proudly show off his tablet game to a group of visiting doctors.

The name Moretti had once been synonymous with bloodshed, extortion, and fear throughout the eastern seaboard. It had represented an iron-fisted monopoly built on blood money and silenced dissent.

Now, as the clock ticked past midnight and the final guests began to bid their farewells, that name meant something entirely different.

It meant state-of-the-art medical endowments funding pediatric research at St. Jude’s. It meant safe, legitimate shipping enterprises employing hundreds of honest workers with fair wages and full benefits. It meant an impenetrable shield protecting a family that had fought its way out of the abyss.

Damien and Ellie walked back inside from the terrace, their hands linked, moving through the crowd with the effortless grace of monarchs who had turned their swords into plowshares.

As they paused near the grand staircase, Vincent approached them, offering a respectful nod.

"Cars are staged for the faculty members, Boss," Vincent reported smoothly. "Security sweep of the perimeter is complete. All clear."

Damien nodded, a faint ghost of his old commanding authority flashing in his eyes before smoothing out into a relaxed, paternal warmth. "Thank you, Vincent. Take the rest of the night off. Spend it with Maya."

Vincent’s stoic face cracked into a rare, genuine grin. "Will do, Mr. Moretti. Goodnight, Ellie. Congratulations."

"Goodnight, Vincent," Ellie smiled warmly as the security chief turned and walked away toward the exit, disappearing into the night alongside Maya.

The ballroom slowly emptied, the brilliant crystal chandelier dimmed to a soft amber glow, and the lingering scent of white roses and champagne settled into the warm evening air.
