Chapter 36 - Whispers on the Terrace

As the formal toasts concluded and the string quartet transitioned into a lively, ambient jazz arrangement, the ballroom began to gently diffuse. Guests drifted outward toward the expansive stone terrace, where towering white stone pillars were entwined with jasmine vines and glowing fairy lights that mirrored the distant stars over the dark, churning waters of the bay.

Ellie stepped out onto the terrace, letting the cool autumn breeze wash over her flushed face. The heavy silk and lace of her gown rustled softly against the stone flags as she walked toward the balustrade, leaning her forearms against the cool marble to look out at the moonlit ocean.

A moment later, the familiar warmth of a heavy wool suit jacket draped over her bare shoulders.

Damien stepped up behind her, sliding his arms around her waist and pulling her back against his chest. He rested his chin on her shoulder, inhaling the scent of vanilla and white roses that lingered in her hair.

"Getting cold?" he murmured against her skin.

"Not at all," Ellie sighed happily, leaning back into his embrace. "It’s just... quiet out here. Sometimes, when the house is full of music and people, I catch myself waiting for the other shoe to drop. For someone to knock on the front gates with a ledger, a threat, or a warrant."

Damien’s arms tightened around her instinctively. His expression hardened into a protective mask for a fraction of a second before softening back into the serene calm of a man who had won his final war.

"There are no more shoes to drop, Ellie," Damien said, his voice dropping into a quiet, absolute promise. "The past is buried ten feet deep in concrete, and anyone foolish enough to test our borders learned years ago what happens when they try. You are safe here. Our children are safe here. Nothing and no one will ever take this away from us."

Ellie turned in his arms, wrapping her hands around his neck, looking up into his dark, piercing eyes. The moonlight cast silver highlights across his sharp features, making him look every bit the powerful sovereign he had always been—yet to her, he was simply home.

"I know," she whispered. "I trust you, Damien. With my life. With our children's lives. I always have."

"Even when I locked you in that suite on the first night?" he teased, a faint, rare smile touching his lips.

"Especially then," Ellie laughed softly. "Though I swore I was going to hit you with a porcelain lamp if you didn't stop talking like a mafia warlord."

"You would have missed," Damien murmured, his gaze dropping to her lips. "Your adrenaline was spiking too high."

"Try me."

He didn't take the challenge. Instead, he leaned down and captured her lips in a kiss that was slow, deep, and filled with the unhurried promise of a lifetime ahead. The distant sound of laughter from the ballroom and the gentle crash of the waves against the cliff below faded into total insignificance as the world narrowed down to just the two of them.
