Chapter 44 - Fireside Reflections

Night descended quickly over the Westchester estate, wrapping the stone manor in a blanket of cool, starry quiet. Inside the grand study, a crackling fire roared in the stone hearth, casting dancing golden flames across the dark wood paneling and the Persian rugs.
Elena sat curled in a deep leather armchair by the fire, wrapped in a thick wool blanket, reading a worn hardcover novel she had pulled from the estate’s extensive library. Across from her, Luke sat at a small chess table, staring thoughtfully at a classic endgame setup left unfinished from the previous evening.
The room was filled with the comforting sound of snapping pine logs and the occasional rustle of turning pages. It was a domestic scene so utterly ordinary that, just a year ago, both of them would have considered it an impossible dream.
Luke reached out, his fingers hovering over a white knight before executing a quiet, decisive move that cornered the black king. He looked up, his blue eyes catching the firelight as he watched Elena lose herself in the rhythm of the story.
"You're not focusing on the board," Elena noted without looking up from her book, a playful smile playing on her lips.
"The board is predictable," Luke replied, leaning back in his chair with a faint smirk. "Unlike my opponent."
Elena lowered her book, looking across the small space between them. The firelight cast soft shadows across her face, highlighting the intelligence and grace that had captivated him from the very beginning. "Are you happy, Luke Mercer?" she asked softly, the question hanging in the warm air like a quiet vow.
Luke stood up from the chess table, walked over to her chair, and knelt down on one knee beside her. He took her hands in his, his expression completely stripped of the guarded armor he had worn for decades.

"I spent my entire life believing that happiness was something you had to conquer, something you had to bleed for," Luke said, his voice deep and sincere. "I was wrong. Happiness isn't a prize at the end of a war. It's sitting right here, by this fire, with you."
Elena’s eyes glistened with unshed tears of pure contentment. She leaned forward, resting her forehead against his, breathing in the scent of woodsmoke and crisp autumn air that still clung to him.
