Chapter 15 - The Quiet Hours Before Dawn

Back in Room 412—or rather, Room 347, as the private maternity suite was designated—the world had contracted to the rhythmic breathing of two people who had stared into the abyss and refused to blink.
Elena had shifted slightly, pulling her knees up beneath the hospital blankets, her eyes heavy with the sweet, exhausting pull of deep sleep. But her hand remained tightly locked in Luke’s, as if she were afraid that if she let go, the nightmare of the past three months would pull her back into the dark.
Luke sat motionless beside the bed. Every muscle in his body ached from the physical toll of the raid, the endless hours of planning, and the sheer adrenaline of the shootout. Yet he didn't move. He didn't want to break the fragile, hard-won serenity of the room.
With his free hand, he reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, worn velvet box.
He hadn't planned on opening it tonight. It was an antique he had acquired months ago during a rare trip to an estate auction in Geneva—a platinum band encrusted with a subtle circle of flawless pink diamonds, meant to replace the simple wedding band that had been lost during the initial attack on their brownstone.
Luke popped the latch with his thumb. The velvet lid lifted silently, revealing the diamonds catching the warm, amber glow of the bedside lamp. They sparkled like tiny stars caught in polished ice.
Elena’s eyelids fluttered open at the faint click of the hinge. She blinked sleepily, focusing her gaze on the small box resting in his palm. A soft, quiet breath escaped her lips.
"What is that?" she whispered, her voice laced with wonder.
Luke didn't answer immediately. He lifted the ring from its velvet slot, holding it delicately between his thumb and forefinger. He gently lifted her left hand, turning her palm upward, exposing the ring finger where a pale, faint indentation still marked the place her original wedding band had been ripped away by Moretti’s men during the kidnapping.
"It's a replacement," Luke said quietly, his voice thick with emotion. "For the one they took from you. For every single piece of security they tried to steal."
Elena’s eyes welled with fresh tears, but this time, there was no fear in them—only an overwhelming, staggering wave of love. She didn't pull her hand away. Instead, she let him slide the platinum band over her knuckle. It fit with absolute, flawless perfection, sealing her finger like a promise kept against the entire world.

"It's beautiful, Luke," she choked out, a tear spilling over her lashes and tracking down her cheek.
Luke leaned forward, pressing his lips gently against her knuckles, right over the new ring. "It doesn't even come close to matching what you survived," he murmured against her skin. "Wear it as a reminder. No matter who comes out of the shadows, no matter what empire tries to rise against us... the Mercer name stands unbroken."
