Chapter 43 - Evening Shadows on the Estate

As the afternoon sun began its slow descent toward the western horizon, casting long, amber shadows across the sprawling lawns, Luke and Elena sat side by side on a stone bench overlooking the valley. The garden beds were neatly planted, the soil dark and rich against the pale stone border of the patio.

A gentle autumn breeze swept through the trees, carrying the earthy scent of crushed leaves and sweet lavender. Elena rested her head against Luke’s shoulder, her fingers interlaced with his rough, calloused hand.

"Do you ever miss it?" Elena asked quietly, her gaze fixed on the fading sunlight dancing across the water of the distant pond. "The scale of it? Having a world hang on your every word?"

Luke looked down at their joined hands, turning the question over in his mind. "I don't miss the weight," he answered honestly. "An empire is a cage made of gold and iron, Elena. You spend every waking hour making sure the bars don't break, forgetting what it's like to walk under an open sky." He squeezed her hand gently. "I had power, but I didn't have a life. Not until you."

Elena turned her face slightly, pressing a soft kiss against his shoulder. "We won, Luke. Against every odd, against every enemy who tried to tear us apart."

"We did," Luke agreed, his voice steady and resolute. "And nobody will ever take this away from us."

From the edge of the property line, half-hidden by a dense cluster of evergreen pines, a sleek black sedan idly parked for a brief moment before its engine hummed to life and it rolled away down the private access road. It was not a threat—only Vance, performing a final evening sweep before leaving the estate to its absolute peace. He didn't even call; he simply sent a single, silent text message to Luke’s phone: Perimeter secure. Goodnight, boss.

Luke glanced at the screen, locked the phone, and slipped it back into his pocket without a second thought. The digital tether to the underworld had finally been cut.
