Chapter 23 - The Last Sunset at St. Catherine’s

The afternoon bled slowly into a breathtaking autumn evening, painting the sky outside Room 347 in brilliant shades of bruised purple, fiery orange, and deep indigo. The city lights below began to flicker on one by one, turning Manhattan into a sprawling galaxy of amber and neon.
Elena stood by the window, supported gently by Luke’s arm around her waist. She wore a soft, loose-fitting cashmere sweater, looking out through the reinforced glass at the river glittering in the twilight.
"I never thought I'd miss the view of the East River," Elena murmured, resting her head against Luke’s shoulder. "Usually, it just looks cold and industrial. From up here tonight, it looks almost peaceful."
"It is peaceful," Luke whispered, kissing the top of her head. "Because the water washed away everything that tried to hurt you."
Elena turned slightly in his arms, her hazel eyes searching his face in the dimming light. "You changed, Luke. Ever since that night at the docks... you're different."
Luke went still for a fraction of a second. He looked down at his hands—hands that had ended Moretti’s life, hands that had built an empire of blood and steel. "Did you expect me to stay the same? A monster hiding behind a corporate title?"
"No," Elena said softly, reaching up to cup his cheek, her thumb brushing over his jawline. "You were never a monster, Luke. You were just a man fighting a war with the only weapons he knew how to use—coldness, control, isolation. But now... now you're fighting for something real. For us."
Luke leaned into her touch, closing his eyes as a wave of profound humility washed over him. He wrapped his arms around her, pulling her against his chest as if he could weld her soul to his own, shielding her from every harsh wind the world could ever muster.

"I spent my whole life believing that power meant standing alone at the top of a mountain," Luke confessed, his voice thick with emotion. "I was wrong. True power is standing right here, holding you, knowing that I have everything I will ever need in this world."
They stood there in silence as the last rays of the sun dipped below the horizon, wrapped in the quiet sanctuary of the hospital room, holding fast to the certainty of a tomorrow that nobody could ever take away from them.
