Chapter 24 - The Morning of the Discharge

The digital clock on the bedside table clicked over to 8:00 AM sharp. The morning of discharge had arrived with crisp, brilliant autumn weather—a bright blue sky overhead and a brisk wind rustling the remaining golden leaves on the trees outside St. Catherine’s Hospital.

Elena was already dressed in a comfortable traveling outfit of dark denim, a soft wool cardigan, and low boots, sitting on the edge of the hospital bed while a discharge nurse checked her final vitals.

"Everything looks pristine, Mrs. Mercer," the nurse announced cheerfully, signing off on the digital clipboard. "Dr. Hayes has officially signed your release papers. The black SUV you requested is waiting down in the private ambulance bay, and your luggage has already been loaded by your security detail."

"Thank you so much for everything," Elena said warmly, shaking the nurse's hand. "You and your team saved my life."

"Just doing our job," the nurse smiled, waving goodbye as she exited the room.

Luke walked in a moment later, wearing a sharp charcoal overcoat, carrying a small canvas duffel bag over his shoulder. He looked around the empty room—the neatly made bed, the amber lamp he had brought from home, the bare table—and felt a profound sense of closure. The hospital room had been their sanctuary, but it was time to leave the cocoon behind and step out into the world they had reclaimed.

"Ready?" Luke asked, walking over and offering her his hand.

Elena stood up, slipping her hand into his firm, warm grip. The platinum band on her finger caught the morning light, gleaming like a tiny beacon of permanence.

"More than ready," she said.

They walked out of Room 347 side by side, their footsteps echoing softly down the third-floor corridor. There were no guards rushing past, no flashing lights, no tension in the air. Just the quiet, absolute dignity of two survivors walking into the rest of their lives.
